The Korea Drone EXPO 2024 took place in Songdo Convensia from 9 to 11 May 2024

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (Minister Park Sang-woo) and Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok) jointly hosted the 5th Korea Drone Expo for three days from May 9th to 11th at the Songdo Convensia in Incheon, and its first time being open to international exhibitors and buyers

Organized by the Korean Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST), Korea Transportation Safety Authority, Incheon Technopark, Incheon Tourism Organization, Korea Drone Business Association, and Korea Drone Football Association, this expo is the largest-ever overseas (more than 20 countries) drone-related expo with global conferences and business familiarization tours.

National agencies, public institutions, local governments, and drone companies showcased drone airframes and utilization services combined with cutting-edge technology. It also had an overseas drone company pavilion in which 12 overseas countries such as Malaysia, the US, Saudi Arabia, and Denmark participated.

The opening ceremony recognized people of merit in the drone industry and the award ceremony of the ‘Idea for the Drone Industry in Emergencies’. Four people of merit who have led the growth of the K-drone industry, such as the overseas expansion of drone soccer and demonstration of commercialization of drone delivery, received a commendation from the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Tourism plans to closely examine the possibility of introducing the ideas discovered through the contest that was attempted for the first time this year with related organizations such as the Road Corporation and the Fire Agency, and actively support technology development and demonstration through drone utilization service support projects such as drone demonstration cities in the future.

After the opening ceremony, the Guinness World Record-winning World Drone Light Show 2024 was held at Songdo Moonlight Festival Park. This show is an example of a successful Korean drone company challenging the world’s largest record and was broadcast live on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport’s YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/@korealand).

The 2024 International Drone Football Festival, in which the largest number of overseas players (more than 300 players) participated, was also held for three days from May 9 to 11 in Hall 1 of the exhibition center. Drone soccer has been growing steadily since it was developed in Jeonju in 2016. In 2022, the International Drone Football Federation (FIDA) was formed, and in January 2024, it also participated in the CES Consumer Electronics Expo in the United States, attracting the attention of the world.

The 25th General Assembly of the International Drone Football Federation (FIDA) discussed holding the 1st Drone Soccer World Cup, and the inauguration ceremony and exhibition match of the founding of 8 teams of the drone soccer semi-professional league will be held. On the second and third event day, the FIDA International Drone Football Tournament Club Competition and National Competition was held, and an agreement ceremony established 15 elementary, middle and high school drone soccer teams to spread the base of drone football.

The Korea Global Drone Conference explored the development of the drone industry and discuss issues related to drones. A drone company investment attraction briefing session was held on May 10 with a total of 15 domestic investment companies, including 4 companies operating the Land Transport Innovation Fund, to expand investment attraction opportunities for promising drone companies, such as the Global Symposium on Drone Transportation, Drone Leisure Sports Seminar, Drone Industry Global Seminar, K-Drone Delivery Seminar, and Civil-Military Cooperation Drone Defense Seminar.

Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Aviation Policy Officer Kim Young-kuk said, “Drones are a ‘game changer’ that is causing innovative changes in our daily lives as well as in various industries, and at the ‘2024 Korea Drone Expo’, you will be able to experience a new world realized by these drones vividly.”
